A pibroch song, known also by the name of ‘Macfarlane’s Gathering’. It is said that a full moon was locally termed ‘Macfarlane’s Lantern’ as the clan, which was based in Loch Lomond, was notorious for stealing cattle from the lowlanders of the Lennox and Menteith – areas which were once their own - on a moonlit night. The song is believed to have been composed in the 1500’s by the clan’s chieftan at the time, Anndra. I am joined on this by the fantastic Brìghde Chaimbeul on small pipes.
lyrics
Thogail nam bò, thogail nam bò,
Thogail nam bò, thèid sinn,
Thogail nam bò, ri uisg’ is ri ceò,
Ri monadh Ghlinn Crò, thèid sinn.
Thogail nan creach, bhualadh le speach
Thogail nan creach, thèid sinn,
Thogail nan creach, gan ioman le speach,
Thogail nan creach thèid sinn.
Thogail nam bò, thogail nam bò,
Thogail nam bò, thèid sinn,
Thogail nam bò, ri uisg’ is ri ceò,
Ri monadh Ghlinn Crò, thèid sinn.
Thogail nan creach, bhualadh le speach
Thogail nan creach, thèid sinn,
Thogail nan creach, gan ioman le speach,
Thogail nan creach thèid sinn.
Togail nam bò suas ris na bealaichean
Togail nam bò an àird ris an aonach
Togail nam bò, soillse na gealaich leibh,
Caogad cruidh ballaich is balaich gan saodach’.
Thogail nam bò, thogail nam bò,
Thogail nam bò, thèid sinn,
Thogail nam bò, ri uisg’ is ri ceò,
Ri monadh Ghlinn Crò, thèid sinn.
